DETAILED CLASS DESCRIPTION

Healthy & Happy Relationship Series:

Over 82% of people report that they want to make their relationships better. However, many times we don’t know where to go for trusted information or how to go about improving. Our Healthy+Happy Relationship Enrichment Series provides fun, research-based ways for individuals and families to improve their relationships and achieve healthy and happy lives.

We teach and help you to implement 7 research-based principles to improve your personal life and the important relationships in your life.

Each class in this series builds on the previous class as you gain understanding and skills to help you build an even more healthy and happy relationship.

Week 1: Resource & Stress Management:

Come learn the tools to help you manage the various priorities in your lives. Between marriage, kids, work, self, church, etc., we are always juggling and dealing with stressors. We almost always wish we could do more of the things we feel we should be doing. In this class, you will learn practical skills to help you bring your life into alignment with your priorities.

Week 2: Attachment in Relationships:

Research has shown that the attachment relationships between spouses and between parents and their children are the sources of the most happiness and biggest stresses in our lives. Among other things, when these relationships are going well, we feel safe, have lower rates of depression and anxiety, we experience fewer physical problems, and we feel like we matter to the important people in our lives.

In this class, you will learn what your attachment style is. You will learn what healthy attachment relationships look like, and learn how to make any necessary changes in your relationships in order to develop secure attachment relationships in your family.

Week 3: Neurology Made Easy:

In this class you will learn three necessary components in order for your brains to have the resources to be able to function properly. You will also learn what happens in the brain and body as we deal with stress and how to stay in a place emotionally that enables us to cope well with difficult situations. Doing this reduces anxiety, poor decision making and depression. You will come away with concrete skills to help you regulate your emotions more effectively and to feel less a victim to the things that occur in your life.

Week 4: Cognitive Cycles and Rewiring the Brain:

There is a dynamic relationship between our thoughts, feelings and actions. Building on the previous weeks’ classes, in this class you will learn how attachment style influences this process. You will learn skills to help eliminate self-defeating thoughts and feelings, empowering you to become the YOU that you want to be.

Week 5: Conflict Resolution:

In this class, you will learn how to healthfully and effectively address and resolve disagreements, hurt feelings, and other conflicts in a way that keeps you connected and doesn’t leave either person feeling voiceless, run over or invisible.

Week 6: Personality:

Personality does not change across the lifespan and is consistently in the background influencing why and how we think, feel, and act the way we do. In this class, you will learn about the 4 CORE personality types. You will be able to identify your particular personality type and gain a greater understanding of the personalities of those closest to you. Each personality type has qualities that are conducive to being healthy and happy, and aspects that get in the way of health and happiness. You will also learn how to capitalize on your strengths and to effectively understand and manage things that are necessary to be healthy & happy, but which don’t come naturally to you.

Week 7: Sexual Intimacy and Gender Differences:

In this last class, you will learn some of the key differences between men and woman and how some of those differences influence sexual intimacy. Additionally, you will learn how the previous 5 classes create a solid foundation to be able to improve the connection and intimacy in the sexual domain of your relationship.

You will leave each class with clear and executable skills that will improve your relationship and help you take whatever your next-step is in helping you and your relationship be more healthy and happy!

Mission Preparation Classes:

Week 1: Resource & Stress Management:

One of the main causes of depression and anxiety for Missionaries comes from not knowing how to manage the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual stresses faced in mission life. Many of the things that you do to cope before your mission aren’t possible on a mission. In this class, you will learn a framework for concrete and practical skills to help you manage and cope with mission-life stressors well!

Class 2: Cognitive Cycles:

There is a dynamic relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Research shows that the brain is changeable and that by learning how to change the way our brains are wired, we can dramatically increase our ability to effectively manage stress and be happy. In this class you will learn how to pilot your brain, enabling you to overcome self-defeating thoughts and beliefs that can cripple a missionary. You will come away with concrete skills to help you regulate your emotions more effectively and to feel less a victim to the things that occur in your life and on your mission.

Class 3: Anxiety and Neurology Made Easy:

Building on the previous class, this class will help you learn what happens in the brain and body as we deal with stress and how to stay in a place emotionally that will enable you to cope well with difficult situations. Doing this reduces anxiety, poor decision making, depression, and anxiety.

Class 4: Companionships:

One of the biggest challenges of serving a Mission is living and getting along with a companion 24/7. Research has shown that when the important relationships in our lives are going well, we feel safe, have lower rates of depression and anxiety, experience fewer physical problems, and we feel like we matter to the important people in our lives. This can be really difficult while serving a mission.

In this class, you will learn how to manage the relationships on your mission in effective ways. This will help you to get along well with companions, members, your Mission President, and your family in ways that help meet your emotional needs.

Class 5: Conflict Resolution:

In this class, you will learn how to choose which battles need to be addressed and which ones are better left alone. You will also learn how to healthfully and effectively address and resolve disagreements, hurt feelings, and other conflicts in a way that keeps you connected and doesn’t leave either person feeling voiceless, run over or invisible.

Class 6: Personality:

Personality does not change across the lifespan and is consistently in the background influencing why and how we think, feel, and act the way we do. Many times, missionaries feel like there is only one way to be an effective or successful missionary. In this class, you will learn about the 4 CORE personality types. You will be able to identify your particular personality type and gain a greater understanding of the personalities of those with whom you will be interacting and working. You will learn how to use your personality to be an effective missionary. You will also learn how to capitalize on your strengths and to effectively understand and manage things that are necessary to be healthy & happy, but which don’t come naturally to you.

CORE Classes:

Class 1: Overview of the 4 CORE Temperament Types:

As each of the 4 CORETemperament Types are discussed in this class, you will be able to identify whether you are the Feeler (C; Comfort & Connection) the Optimist (O), the Doer (R; Resolution) or the Perfecter (E; Exactness). You will gain an understanding of what motivates each type and why each type is so important to our society.

Class 2: Handling Stress, Anxiety, and Depression:

Each personality type naturally manages stress differently. “This is the way I handle things,” and “you’ve got to respect and allow me to do what I need to,” are common misconceptions that we have. In this class, you will learn what the default coping strategies are for each type and how to bring those defaults into alignment with what is healthy.

Class 3: Communication Styles of Different Types:

Wondering what personality types fit well with each other? This class is an overview of the dynamics between the different personality types and how each type communicates. You will begin to learn the effects these communication styles have on relationships between different personality types.

Class 4: Interactions and Conflict Resolution:

Building on last week’s class, in this class you will learn the importance of communicating in ways that are congruent with someone’s personality. The common pitfalls, misunderstandings, etc. with different personality combinations and how to avoid and repair such pitfalls will be presented.

In this class, you will learn how to healthily and effectively address disagreements, hurt feelings, and other conflicts in a way that keeps you connected instead of creating distance. Learn how to account for each other’s personality types and communication styles in conflict resolution.

Class 5: Parenting Each Type:

In this class, you will learn how to be aware of the personality types of your children. Each personality type, with its specific traits, needs to be parented differently. By parenting with your children’s personalities in mind, you will be better able to connect with and support your children.

Class 6: Gender Differences and Sexual Relationships in the Context of CORE:

In addition to the influences that personality exerts in our lives, there are predictable differences between men and women. In this class, you will learn how both gender and personality influence the sexual connection in a relationship. You will learn how to incorporate the knowledge you have learned throughout these classes to improve the connection and intimacy in your relationship.
