Begin a detailed search for our uninvited visitor and, if the shade is sighted, relay any finding to Gault, Esbaman and the Royal Guard. Have Gault bring to bear all weapons at his disposal. Arm all

within the keep, including the Rivernauts. In the meantime order additional men to protect Lord Kydon’s quarters. Immediately report the first sign of trouble.”

“Yes, father,” Darc said earnestly. “The watch begins, your charges will be fulfilled.” The archer prince bolted in direction of the four-towered castle.

Ethwin smiled at the wispy Sage. “My sincerest appreciation for your choice words at the gate. Tonight, in chamber, I shall require your profound wittiness.”

“I understand, your Highness,” Lish said with a courtly bow. “It has been written: ‘Grass gets greener, trees grow taller, men become older and sometimes wiser.’” His grey eyes twinkled. “We must be the wiser, Sire.”

Ethwin smiled back and exhaled deeply. “You comfort me with confidence and wisdom, but my heart is heavy-laden. Shiver my cold bones. Untold pain
