What is Grassroots democracy?

Today the word “democracy” is used in ways that are far removed from its original meaning. At its orgin in ancient Athens, democracy was understood to be the process by which people gathered together to decide collectively how they would live as a society. In our time, however, democracy has come to mean the election of a small subset of people to decide for the whole, authorized by the power of the people to rule themselves in principle—while not necessarily doing so in practice.

Many believe that democracies everywhere now listen to the voices of their publics far too little. This page is thus dedicated to providing resources for people who are thinking about democracy's promise, and about how people may regain greater voice in deciding how we shall live in together.

Stay tuned!
